Weekly update: Tyrol lockdown, exciting update for Schönbrunn Castle

Coronavirus


Following the spreading of mutations, Tyrol is now de facto under quarantine. Since Friday, leaving the federal state is only possible with a negative test. Markus Blume, General Secretary of the German CSU, had criticised Austria’s pandemic management as ‘irresponsible’ and threatened to close the Bavarian-Austrian border.

Politics


The government will subsidise the transition to more environmentally-friendly heating systems. Environment Minister Gewessler (Grüne) announced a new package of subventions for 650 million euros.

A glass of ‘Spritzer’ (Austria’s iconic mixture of wine and sparkling water) while visiting Vienna’s most famous castle? Schönbrunn Castle will get its own on-site ‘Heuriger’, a traditional Austrian wine kiosk, from next autumn.


Sport


Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem won the third round of the Australian Open against Nick Kyrgios.


Word of the week


Es geht sich aus’ is the Austrian equivalent of the German expression ‘es passt’, ‘to work out (all right)’.
