Weekly update: tumultuous week in the German charts, exciting Deutschrap releases

New releases

It’s been a tumultuous week in the German charts, with the TikTok sea shanty sensation Nathan Evans securing second place, matching his UK chart performance.

Nonetheless, there have been a number of noteworthy German-language releases, with the legendary punk rock outfit Die Ärzte coming in at fifth with “ACHTUNG:BIELEFELD”, a tongue-in-cheek ode to boredom typical of their ironic style.

As ever, there’s a strong Deutschrap presence in the Top 40, with big name Berliner Luciano featuring on two of the new releases. In his solo track “Nicht wach”, he returns to his hip-hop roots after dabbling in the UK drill scene. He also features on Ufo361’s track “WINGS 2.0”, a brief but playful collaboration between two rappers who have established themselves at the pinnacle of the German rap scene.

Song of the week – Tomte – “Ich sang die ganze Zeit von dir”

Britpop-infused indie band Tomte released “Ich sang die ganze Zeit von dir” in 2006, the lead single from their fourth album “Buchstaben über der Stadt”. Gentle guitar riffs are driven by a crisp rhythm section, a pumping bassline, and a memorable chorus. Thees Uhlmann, the band’s singer, effectively presents his partner as the personification of love.
