Weekly update: German Health Minister and UK Deputy Chief Medical Officer discuss pandemic

Bilateralism


It’s been a busy couple of days for high-level UK-Germany bilateralism. Germany’s health minister Jens Spahn discussed the pandemic with the UK’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Prof. Jonathan Van-Tam. Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab marked 75 years of partnership with North Rhine-Westphalia in a call with CDU leader Armin Laschet.

Finance


About 1,000 EU finance firms are seeking to open offices in the UK to move or boost their presence after Brexit, according to financial consultancy Bovill. Of these firms, 168 were German.


Research


The virtual Networking Tour in Artificial Intelligence (26-30 April) is open for applications until 8 March. AInet 4/2021 will give students and researchers insight into Germany’s data science and AI research landscape, along with networking opportunities.


Vaccines


The COVAX COVID-19 vaccine distribution programme delivered its first doses this week, to Ghana. Germany and the UK are among the largest donors to the initiative, which aims to distribute vaccines and resources around the world more equitably.
