Weekly update: Austrian government announces funding for medical research

Coronavirus


The Austrian Federal Government announced that 22 million euros will be made available for medical research in the fight against COVID-19 during a press conference last Saturday.


Lockdown measures have been extended until April 13th, whilst Tyrol, the most affected Austrian state, has put all its municipalities under quarantine. Austria now has 2,814 cases.


Politics


The Green Party (Die Grünen) demanded that Austria take in refugees from Greek camps  - breaching the party line of its coalition partner (ÖVP). The demonstration “Asylum is a human right”("Asyl ist Menschenrecht"), organised by human rights groups and Green MPs, took place online on Saturday.


Culture


The Austrian newspaper Der Standardis collecting and presenting daily cultural offers (music, cabaret, films and podcasts), now available to stream online. Here is the selection of ‘cultural tips for home’ (Kulturtipps für daheim) from Friday.


Elsewhere


Austria has retained its position as one of the happiest countries in the world according to the UN World Happiness Report 2020. It improved its ranking by one place (9th out of 153).
