Weekly update: Fiete Arp seals switch to Bayern

This week was not without big transfer news too, with the announcement that Hamburg youngster and Football Manager 2019 legend Jan Fiete-Arp will join Bayern by the summer of 2020 at the latest.


Some Bundesliga teams had an Englische Woche this week, with those left in the DFB-Pokal playing their Last 16 ties midweek. There were three notable shocks in the Round of 16, with second-division Heidenheim coming from behind to beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1. Meanwhile, fellow 2. Bundesliga side Hamburger SV triumphed 1-0 over FC Nürnberg and in a chaotic game in Dortmund, the Bundesliga leaders crashed out of the competition on penalties against Werder Bremen, despite leading twice in extra time.

Dortmund looked to have put their midweek cup defeat behind them after 74 minutes of their Bundesliga home game against Hoffenheim – they were 3-0 up and cruising. Julian Nagelsmann’s Hoffenheim had other ideas, however. They fought back in stunning fashion, with three goals in 12 minutes to secure a draw and heap misery on Lucien Favre’s side. To make matters worse, Bayern battled to a 3-1 win over Schalke in Saturday’s late game to reduce Dortmund’s lead at the top of the Bundesliga to five points.
