A 20-year-old man from Hesse has been arrested in conjunction with last week’s huge data leak. The suspect, accused of Ausspähen von Daten (data spying) and Datenhehlerei (data gathering), is said to have confessed and is cooperating in the investigation with the authorities. As he has willfully assisted and the investigators do not fear that he will flee or destroy evidence, he has not been remanded in custody. The charges carry a maximum sentence of three years, which some have decried as too mild.
Elsewhere, CDU leader Kramp-Karrenbauer said the party will comprehensively review the immigration system, from the 2015 crisis onwards, at a planned workshop in February. Including 2015's crisis in the review contradicts the view of her predecessor Merkel, who said such discussions amounted to "wasted time” (Die Welt am Sonntag).
Kramp-Karrenbauer is also putting pressure on the governmenton pension issues, which have beleaguered divorced women of the GDR, who were among the biggest losers of the reunification. The AfD and the Greens have also promised action.
Finally, on the second day of its Party Congress in Saxony, the AfD has controversially called for a “Dexit” (Deutschland-Exit). This is not the first time the party has hit the headlines this week after their Bremen MP Frank Magnitz was brutally assaulted by 3 masked men.
