SPD Leadership: Olaf Scholz, finance minister, deputy chancellor and ally of Angela Merkel lost his bid to become leader of the centre-left SPD. The SPD instead elected Norbert Walter-Borjans and Saskia Esken as new leaders, winning 53% of the vote, bringing to a close a contest we first covered back in October. Mr Walter-Borjans and Ms Esken are relative unknowns from the party's leftist contingent. The election result must now be confirmed at a party conference slated to run from December 6th-8th. Should the two be confirmed as party leaders, their first order of business will be deciding whether to stay in a coalition government with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats (CDU). The candidates stated their aim to renegotiate the coalition deal with Ms Merkel's CDU to focus more on social justice and investment. AFD leadership: The AfD elected a new co-leader, Tino Chrupalla, a lawmaker from Saxony. “It is time to send a clear signal with a double leadership made up of representatives from both the east and west,” Chrupalla told delegates. The election of a politician from the east comes after the AfD surged to second place in local elections in Saxony, Brandenburg and Thuringia with more than 20% of votes.
