Plans for the new Museum der Moderne Berlin art gallery on the rocks

Updated: Apr 13, 2020

Plans for the new Museum der Moderne Berlin art gallery could be on the rocks after costs almost doubled from the original budget (€200 million). The concrete bunker design in its prominent Potsdamer Platz location was already controversial, described by some Berliners as a glorified ‘beer tent’.

It’s been used for political ends by opposition politicians, who are criticizing soaring costs and threatening to cancel the project. But currently there is nowhere to display the large and rich state collection of twentieth century art in its entirety. Will the project be scrapped? Not if Angela Merkel can help it.
